DHL Supply Chain has announced the acquisition of Inmar Supply Chain Solutions, a division of Inmar Intelligence specializing in reverse logistics for the retail e-commerce industry.

This strategic move positions DHL Supply Chain as the largest reverse logistics provider in North America.

The acquisition includes 14 return centres and approximately 800 employees, bolstering DHL’s North American operations, which currently encompass over 520 warehouses and a workforce of 52,000 associates.

Oscar de Bok, Global CEO of DHL Supply Chain, stated: “DHL Supply Chain’s market-leading logistics expertise and the addition of Inmar’s suite of returns services and its talented workforce will enable us to provide best-in-class logistics services to our industry customers. Together, we will create a returns business in North America that is unmatched in its depth, breadth, capabilities, and talent to fuel long-term growth.”

Through this expansion, DHL will enhance its capabilities in returns management, incorporating services such as product remarketing, recall management, and supply chain performance analytics. Inmar Intelligence will continue to manage its pharmaceutical reverse distribution business.

Patrick Kelleher, CEO of DHL Supply Chain, North America, added: “As companies strive to simplify their supply chain strategies and enhance their operational agility, DHL Supply Chain continues to innovate to provide comprehensive and integrated solutions. This acquisition strengthens our existing capabilities, allowing us to offer our customers a single-source solution for their entire supply chain, including the critical and complex area of returns management. This enhances the value we deliver to our customers by streamlining their operations, reducing complexity, and improving their overall supply chain efficiency.”

As e-commerce continues to grow and consumer behaviours evolve, the importance of efficient returns management has surged for both in-store and online retail. Retailers face rising challenges, including returns abuse and increasing operational costs, while consumers expect seamless and hassle-free returns processes.

Spencer Baird, CEO of Inmar Intelligence, mentioned: “Inmar Intelligence and DHL share a deep commitment to customer-focused innovation.  Because of that, we are confident that DHL will build even greater things on top of the Inmar Supply Chain Solutions foundation that we developed over time.  As well, we are thrilled that Inmar associates will have an even broader set of supply chain experiences available from which they can continue to learn and develop over time at DHL.  For Inmar Intelligence, this deal sets the stage for us to apply an even deeper level of focus and investment into our core businesses that are expanding rapidly.”

The acquisition reflects DHL’s customer-centric strategy, emphasizing collaboration, expertise, and integration to address complex supply chain demands. This addition will expand DHL’s value-added service offerings, enabling more comprehensive and strategic solutions for its clients.

Furthermore, the acquisition aligns with DHL’s commitment to sustainability, a key focus in its Strategy 2030 and its overarching goal to decarbonize operations by 2050. By adopting low-carbon logistics practices, DHL aims to support global customers in achieving carbon neutrality.

Inmar’s innovative reverse logistics solutions play a pivotal role in sustainability, helping reduce costs and minimize waste from returned consumer goods.

With a strong emphasis on recommerce, Inmar has successfully diverted 99% of consumer returns from landfills, a practice that complements DHL’s mission to create more sustainable supply chains. This acquisition underscores DHL’s dedication to driving sustainability while addressing the challenges of modern logistics.
