Putin Unveils Next-Gen Nuclear Submarine Armed with Hypersonic Technology

March 27 (Reuters) – on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin unveiled a cutting-edge nuclear submarine, the Perm, which boasts hypersonic Zircon missiles that can zip through the skies at amazing speeds. During a live broadcast from Murmansk in the Arctic, he declared, “I hereby authorize!” as he launched this notable vessel.

according to Russian news outlets, the Perm is notable for being the first of its kind to come standard with Zircon missiles. These advanced weapons have an impressive range of 900 kilometers (about 560 miles) and are notoriously hard to intercept due to their rapid velocity.

The perm joins five other submarines in Russia’s yasen and Yasen-M classes, all constructed at Sevmash shipyard near Murmansk. Reports indicate that this new submarine features some slight modifications compared to its predecessors in terms of design specifications.

While in Murmansk, Putin also took time to explore another submarine named Arkhangelsk from the same class and visited Atomflot enterprise—responsible for managing Russia’s icebreaker fleet.

In a world where naval power is increasingly defined by technological advancements like these hypersonic capabilities, it’s engaging how nations are racing not just for military superiority but also for strategic advantages in maritime operations. The implications of such developments extend beyond mere defense; they could reshape global trade routes and international relations as countries adapt their strategies accordingly.
