Carnival Cruise Line Finalizes Integration of P&O’s Australian Ventures

Carnival Cruise Line has taken a significant leap forward by expanding its presence in Australia, officially integrating two ships from its former sister brand, P&O Cruises Australia. As of March 29, the fleet now boasts 29 vessels—the largest in the company’s history over its 53 years.

Last year, Carnival made headlines with the decision to retire the P&O brand, wich has deep roots in Australian maritime history. The origins of P&O (Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company) date back to the 1830s when it began connecting England and Australia. By 1932, they were pioneers in cruising from Australian shores. After merging with Orient Line in 1960, they continued to play a vital role in modern cruising throughout the decades.

Carnival Corporation acquired P&O back in 2003 and aimed to tap into Australia’s cruise market by transferring ships from various brands under its umbrella. The Carnival Cruise Line made its debut down under in 2012 and introduced its first large vessel, Carnival Splendor, into service by 2019. However, rising operational costs and regulatory challenges prompted Carnival to consolidate operations between P&O Australia and itself while still maintaining separate UK-based cruises for P&O.

P&O’s final voyages wrapped up this past February before sending their two ships off for upgrades at Melbourne’s wet dock—where they underwent extensive refurbishments including structural changes and tech enhancements alongside fresh decor. They’re also set to feature Carnival’s renowned entertainment offerings.

The newly rebranded vessels are now called Carnival Adventure and carnival Encounter. Previously known as P&O’s fleet sence their launch for Princess Cruises as Grand Princess and Star Princess, these ships weigh in at about 108,865 gross tons each with room for around 2,600 guests.

“Our growth journey here reflects our guests’ enthusiasm,” shared Christine Duffy, president of carnival Cruise Line. “By doubling our offerings at homeports like
