Irish Minister Raises Alarm Over Pharmaceutical Trade Barriers

The finance minister of Ireland is quite worried about how the U.S. tariffs on pharmaceutical exports could shake up the Irish economy, according to a report from BBC News.

in an interview with RTÉ, Paschal donohoe expressed that the Irish government is bracing for some “real and significant” challenges if President trump goes ahead with these tariffs on drug imports.

On March 27, Trump hinted at imposing specific tariffs on pharmaceuticals, claiming that the U.S. “doesn’t produce anything” in terms of drugs and medicines.

Ireland hosts nine out of ten of the largest pharmaceutical companies globally, drawn there by attractive tax rates and a skilled English-speaking workforce.

During a recent meeting at the White House with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Trump remarked that Ireland essentially holds sway over the entire U.S. pharmaceutical sector.

in his comments to RTÉ on March 28, Martin emphasized that safeguarding Irish jobs is their top priority as Trump’s tariff strategy could impact not just pharmaceuticals but various industries operating in Ireland as well.
