Egypt looks at alternative fuel project development in Suez

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting to review a proposed green hydrogen and ammonia production project in the Gulf of Suez.

This initiative aligns with Egypt’s energy strategy, emphasizing renewable sources to cut carbon emissions and strengthen the country’s energy sector. Madbouly highlighted the importance of green fuel projects in positioning Egypt as a hub for green hydrogen, leveraging the state’s incentives and abundant renewable resources.

The “Green Fuel Alliance,” a joint effort between the Ministries of Transport and Electricity, aims to produce green ammonia at a competitive cost for use as an alternative fuel, supporting global decarbonization efforts.

A key goal of the project is to supply green fuel to ships passing through the Suez Canal and for export, reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional energy trading hub.

The meeting included top officials from the energy, transport, and investment sectors, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy projects.

To remind, during COP28, Waleid Gamal El-Dien, chairman of General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Alaa Hagar, Head of the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum’s Technical Office, and Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec ASA, signed an MoU aimed at issuing a license to practice the activity of ships’ bunkering with green fuel for Scatec in East Port Said.
