WinGD introduces X‑DF‑M platform with largest ever methanol-fuelled engine

Swiss marine power company WinGD is set to deliver its inaugural methanol-fueled engine to a shipyard following successful factory and type approval tests.

The engine, a ten-cylinder, 92 bore X-DF-M, is designed for a 16,000 TEU container ship and stands as the largest methanol-fueled engine constructed to date.

Currently, there are 56 orders for X-DF-M engines spanning bore sizes from 52 to 92, featuring similar cylinder configurations and engine ratings as their diesel-fueled counterparts.

WinGD CEO Dominik Schneiter remarked that ship operators can rely on WinGD for dependable, efficient engine designs that support decarbonization with all potential fuels.

The delivery milestone was celebrated at a ceremony at engine builder CMD in Shanghai, with attendance from top executives of WinGD, CMD, China State Shipbuilding Corporation, local government officials, and global customers and partners.

A CMD spokesperson said the inaugural methanol-fueled engine met all performance expectations during testing.

The first X-DF-M engine is slated for installation on the fourth vessel of a new series, with the preceding three vessels equipped with 10X92-B engines, which will be converted to 10X92DF-M engines following the commissioning of the first methanol engine.

WinGD will also offer dual-fuel methanol conversion kits for all its engine models. Like LNG, methanol can be produced with minimal carbon emissions using biomass or renewable energy combined with carbon capture.
