Mabanaft, a leading independent energy company, has announced a significant investment to rebuild and retrofit its Blumensand tank terminal in the Port of Hamburg. The project, aimed at converting four existing tanks for methanol storage, marks a strategic move to support the growing demand for low-carbon alternatives in shipping, transportation, and the chemical industry.

The company’s vision aligns with the global shift toward greener energy solutions, with plans to facilitate the import, storage, and distribution of methanol to northern Germany and beyond.

Timeline and Investment Details

Mabanaft’s ambitious project will unfold over the next few years, with retrofitting work on the four tanks set to begin in mid-2025. The tanks, which have a combined storage capacity of 20,000 cubic meters, will be converted in two stages:

  • Stage 1: Conversion of the first two tanks by mid-2026.
  • Stage 2: Completion of the remaining two tanks by 2027.

Methanol storage operations are expected to commence in 2027, contingent upon securing necessary approvals from the Hamburg Authority of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA). Mabanaft initiated the application process for the required permits in January 2024, signaling its commitment to this multi-million-euro project.

Decarbonizing Energy Solutions

Mabanaft’s focus on methanol reflects the company’s broader strategy to offer low-carbon energy solutions tailored to customer needs. Methanol, a versatile fuel, can be produced through various low-carbon methods:

  • E-methanol: Synthesized using renewable electricity and captured CO₂.
  • Biomethanol: Derived from biomass.
  • Blue methanol: Produced from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS).

“These options allow us to adapt to regional legislation and customer preferences,” said Joost Vespermann, Business Developer in Mabanaft’s Sustainable Fuels division.

Shipping Industry as a Key Market

The maritime sector is poised to be one of the primary beneficiaries of Mabanaft’s methanol storage capabilities. “In the shipping industry, there is no single solution for sustainable fuels,” explained Oleksandr Siromakha, Head of Sustainable Fuels at Mabanaft. “We are committed to providing a diverse range of options, from bio-blends to hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol.”

Mabanaft is actively supporting European cruise lines and other maritime players in transitioning to methanol as a cleaner alternative. Earlier this year, the company signed a letter of intent to supply green methanol to TUI Cruises, further solidifying its role in advancing sustainable marine fuels.

Beyond the marine sector, Mabanaft envisions methanol being used as a gasoline additive and as a feedstock in the chemical industry.

Pioneering a Greener Future

By investing in methanol storage infrastructure, Mabanaft aims to simplify the energy transition for its customers. The company’s strategy underscores its dedication to decarbonization and to providing practical solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.

“We want to make methanol and other alternative fuels more accessible,” said Siromakha. “The challenges of decarbonization are significant, but we are here to support our customers every step of the way.”

This latest initiative in Hamburg further cements Mabanaft’s position as a pioneer in sustainable energy, demonstrating its commitment to driving decarbonization across multiple industries.
