Hafnia, one of the largest independent product tanker companies globally, has recently achieved a significant milestone in its decarbonization journey. In partnership with its joint-venture partner SOCATRA of France, Hafnia celebrated the naming ceremony of the Ecomar Gascogne, the first of four 49,500 deadweight (dwt) dual-fuel Methanol vessel, a Chemical/Product oil tanker, IMO II Medium-Range (MR), built under the ECOMAR banner at Guangzhou Shipyard International.

This follows the successful completion of construction and sea trials of the Ecomar Gascogne, marking a major step forward in Hafnia’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. The vessel, designed to operate on both conventional fuels and methanol, is part of Hafnia’s broader strategy to provide flexibility for cleaner fuel adoption. As one of the largest players in the product tanker sector, Hafnia’s move to include dual-fuel capabilities aligns with the growing need for decarbonization within the maritime industry.

The Ecomar Gascogne and the remaining vessels, each with a deadweight of 49,500 dwt, will be time-chartered by energy giant TotalEnergies for a multi-year period, with the next vessels slated for delivery across 2025 and 2026. These dual-fuel vessels, designed with flexibility to operate on both conventional fuels and green methanol, will play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport.

Mikael Skov, CEO of Hafnia, shared his excitement: “This is a proud moment for Hafnia as we take another step towards a more sustainable future. The Ecomar Gascogne is the first of four vessels designed to run on both conventional fuel and methanol, providing us with greater flexibility to adopt cleaner fuel options as part of our decarbonization strategy. We appreciate the collaboration with our partners at SOCATRA and TotalEnergies, and the excellent craftsmanship from Guangzhou Shipyard International in bringing this vision to life. We eagerly anticipate the delivery of the remaining vessels in 2025 and 2026.”

SOCATRA, a leading French maritime operator, continues to strengthen its partnership with Hafnia through this joint venture, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation. Additionally, the collaboration with TotalEnergies, a global energy giant, further solidifies the partners’ long-standing relationship and their shared commitment to advancing cleaner fuel solutions within the shipping industry.

As Hafnia continues to lead the charge in sustainable shipping practices, the company remains focused on exploring additional green fuel technologies, such as Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) and shore power connections, further enhancing the environmental sustainability of its fleet.
