Wagenborg Passenger Services, a part of the Royal Wagenborg family business, has taken a significant step toward modernizing its ferry operations with the signing of a construction contract for a new ‘Wadden ferry’ dedicated to the fast service between Ameland and Holwert. The contract, signed with Next Generation Shipyards, represents a multi-million-euro investment aimed at enhancing the accessibility and sustainability of ferry transport in the Wadden Sea region.

Commitment to Reliable and Sustainable Transport

Jieskje Hollander, Director of Wagenborg Passenger Services, emphasized the company’s long-term responsibility in maintaining an efficient and sustainable connection between Ameland and the mainland. “We feel responsible to fulfill the lifeline function between the island and the shore as well as possible for the long term. That is why we are further developing our services, of which this new ship is a good example,” Hollander stated.

The new vessel, designed to accommodate 75 passengers, is intended to ease growing transport demands while ensuring a future-proof and environmentally friendly operation. Wagenborg’s investment underscores its commitment to improving the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of maritime transport in the region.

Boost to Northern Netherlands’ Economy

The construction of the vessel is being undertaken by Next Generations Shipyards in collaboration with several Northern Netherlands subcontractors. This initiative not only supports the vital ferry connection but also contributes to regional economic growth and job creation within the shipbuilding sector.

Advanced Design for Efficiency and Environmental Impact

The Wadden ferry is specifically designed for the unique maritime conditions of the Wadden Sea, featuring a shallow draft of only 80 centimeters. This design enhancement ensures more reliable operations, even at lower water levels, thereby improving service continuity.

One of the ferry’s key innovations is its advanced high-efficiency waterjet propulsion system, which significantly reduces fuel consumption. The vessel is powered by three state-of-the-art engines that comply with the strictest emission regulations, minimizing the release of harmful substances. As a result, the new ferry will cut CO2 emissions by over 50% per trip compared to the current fast service vessel, Ms Fostaborg. Additionally, due to its higher passenger capacity, per-passenger emissions will be reduced by nearly 70%.

Looking ahead, the vessel is designed with future sustainability in mind. It is equipped to operate on biodiesel and can be easily converted to a fully electric propulsion system, ensuring long-term environmental benefits.

Enhanced Safety and Passenger Comfort

The new ferry will feature cutting-edge navigation systems, including an advanced Mouse Boat positioning system, allowing precise and multidirectional maneuverability. This is particularly valuable during docking procedures, ensuring enhanced safety during mooring and unmooring.

Passenger comfort has also been prioritized, with increased luggage storage space at the rear and under the seats. Additionally, USB-C charging ports have been installed at passenger seats, providing convenience during the crossing. The ferry will also be fully accessible to disabled passengers, reinforcing Wagenborg’s commitment to inclusive transport solutions.

Delivery and Service Launch

The new Wadden ferry is scheduled for delivery to Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten by the end of December 2025, with its operational launch anticipated in early 2026. This investment marks a major milestone in the transition toward a more sustainable and efficient ferry service in the Wadden Sea region.
