DP World Southampton invests US$75 million in Europe’s largest quay cranes

DP World is boosting the UK’s trade infrastructure with a US$75 million investment in four state-of-the-art quay cranes for its Southampton container terminal.

These cranes, set to be the largest in Europe, will feature quad-lift capabilities, allowing them to move two 12-meters containers simultaneously from ship to yard. This innovation will significantly reduce the time required to load and unload large container vessels.

Aart Hille Ris Lambers, Vice President – Commercial, Ports & Terminals at DP World in the UK, commented: “Our order for these new large quay cranes comes at a crucial time for DP World Southampton. We are continually innovating and investing to enhance our operations to give our customers, who operate the world’s largest container vessels, a smooth and efficient service.

“As our productivity and handling rates at Southampton continue to grow year-on-year, and we develop our nationwide end-to-end supply chain network, we’re always looking for ways to improve our infrastructure and our offer to customers while serving the national interest.”

Towering above Big Ben and weighing over 2,000 tonnes each, the cranes are designed to handle the world’s largest ships, including 24,000 TEU mega-ships. Expected to arrive by mid-2026, the cranes are built for a 25-year operational lifespan, representing a key step in future-proofing DP World Southampton’s capacity for global trade.
