China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel ship sets green benchmark

On the morning of 18 February, China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship COSCO SHIPPING Yangpu was officially named in Yangzhou.

This milestone marks a significant step forward for COSCO SHIPPING in the development of green, low-carbon strategic industries and the advancement of its new energy fuel fleet.

The occasion also coincides with the ninth anniversary of COSCO SHIPPING’s reorganization, marking a new chapter as the company continues to innovate and lead in the shipping industry.

The naming ceremony was attended by Zhu Bixin, President of COSCO SHIPPING; Sun Yunfei, Executive Vice President and CFO of COSCO SHIPPING; Pan Guoqiang, Deputy Secretary of the Yangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Mayor; and representatives from COSCO SHIPPING Holdings, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, and numerous partner organizations, including China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), China Classification Society, American Bureau of Shipping, and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology.

The vessel COSCO SHIPPING Yangpu is the first in a series of methanol dual-fuel container ships constructed by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Yangzhou for COSCO SHIPPING Holdings. With a length of 366 meters, a moulded beam of 51 meters, and a maximum capacity of 16,136 TEUs, the vessel demonstrates advancements in technology, green innovation, and low-carbon digital intelligence. It plays a pivotal role in COSCO SHIPPING’s efforts to support green shipping corridors and establish a green methanol industry chain, further propelling the sustainable transformation of China’s shipping sector.

Thanks to its innovative design, including a large methanol storage tank, the vessel can complete a one-way voyage between the Far East and the West Coast of America entirely in “pure methanol mode” when deployed on COSCO SHIPPING Line’s transpacific route.

This capability opens new opportunities for optimizing global shipping routes with a focus on sustainability. Equipped with an intelligent ship system, the vessel delivers exceptional performance in energy efficiency and low-carbon, energy-saving operations, setting a new standard for energy conservation and emission reduction in the global shipping industry.
