Israeli Freighter Involved in Collision with Cargo Ship on Yangtze River

An Israeli-operated capesize bulk carrier, Cape Legacy, sustained important hull damage following a collision with the Chinese cargo ship Feida 138 in the Yangtze River estuary on March 7, 2025.

The incident took place around 16:12 in the Yuanyuan Sha warning zone as both ships were navigating through their respective channels. Reports indicate that Feida 138, a dry bulk carrier weighing 12,800 dwt and managed by Jiangsu Feihongda Shipping Co., was coming from the South Channel. In contrast, Cape Legacy, which has a deadweight tonnage of 180,000 and is operated by Mano Maritime of Israel, was traveling through the North Channel.

The two vessels collided in a busy shipping area resulting in visible damage to Cape Legacy. Online images depict substantial gashes on its port side bow and scratches along its hull.The vessel was carrying a load of iron ore weighing approximately 90,000 dwt when it began taking on water due to the impact.

Following the accident, multiple tugboats along with two crane ships—Dong Nan Qi No. 12 and dong Nan Qi No. 9—were dispatched for assistance. Initially stranded near the site of collision and obstructing part of the waterway, Cape legacy was successfully refloated on March 8.

Subsequently,it was relocated to Baoshan Beimaodi Anchorage within the Yangtze River for thorough inspection by maritime authorities. Meanwhile, Feida 138 measures about 134 meters (440 feet) long and has been moved to an anchorage; however, details regarding any damages it incurred remain undisclosed.

Fortunately for both crews involved in this incident, ther were no reported injuries or signs of environmental contamination or oil spills in surrounding waters.

Mano Maritime confirmed that at the time of collision Cape Legacy had pilot guidance alongside tugboat support but has not provided additional information regarding what led to this event.
