The United Kingdom has expressed serious concerns regarding China’s actions in the South China Sea,labeling them as “dangerous and destabilizing.” This assertion was made by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy via the social media platform X.

The South China Sea has been a hotspot for ongoing tensions between China and the Philippines over maritime issues. During his visit to the Philippines on March 8, Lammy emphasized the UK’s dedication to uphold international law and ensure freedom of navigation in thes waters.

He highlighted that approximately one-third of global maritime trade transits through this region, underscoring its importance for the world economy. Disruptions here could adversely affect economic growth not only in the UK but also globally.

Lammy noted that the Philippines is at the forefront of these disputes, frequently facing challenges to its maritime rights and adherence to international law.

He stressed that it is vital to comply with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and collaborate towards maintaining regional stability.

In a bid to enhance cooperation in defence, maritime security, climate initiatives, and trade,Britain and the Philippines have established a joint framework agreement. This agreement aims to fortify their Enhanced Partnership initiated in 2021.

During discussions with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo, Lammy reiterated Britain’s commitment to supporting Philippine economic development and global stability. He also mentioned that their £2.8 billion trade relationship continues expanding, generating further opportunities for both nations.

China responded sharply to Lammy’s remarks, cautioning Britain against meddling in regional matters. A spokesperson from China’s foreign ministry stated that Britain shoudl respect China’s territorial sovereignty while asserting that the South China Sea remains one of “the safest and freest maritime routes worldwide.”
