Vopak Horizon Fujairah Pioneers UAE’s Inaugural Bio-Bunker Fuel Delivery

Vopak Horizon Fujairah has successfully executed its inaugural bio-bunker fuel supply operation in the UAE. This joint-venture terminal, managed by Vopak (VOPA.AS), delivered B24 bunker fuel, which consists of 24% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) blended with very Low Sulfur Fuel oil (VLSFO).

This biofuel complies with International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standards, aimed at minimizing sulfur emissions and fostering eco-kind shipping practices.

Due to commercial confidentiality, Vopak has not revealed the identities of the companies involved in this initiative.

The use of biofuels like FAME-blended fuel is instrumental for the shipping sector in lowering emissions. By mixing biofuels with traditional fuels such as VLSFO,companies are effectively reducing sulfur oxides and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby enhancing sustainability in maritime operations. The ISCC certification guarantees that these fuels adhere to stringent sustainability criteria and support global environmental regulations, including compliance with the IMO 2020 sulfur cap.

Currently, Vopak operates 32 ISCC-certified terminals worldwide that facilitate the storage of sustainable fuels like biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

By providing cleaner energy options for vessels navigating one of the busiest shipping corridors globally, Vopak is playing a vital role in promoting greener alternatives.Fujairah stands as the third-largest bunkering port globally and serves as a key refueling hub for international maritime traffic. Its strategic position along major trade routes combined with advanced storage capabilities solidifies its importance within the global fuel supply network.
