CMA CGM’s first dual-fuel methanol boxship makes maiden call at Singapore

CMA CGM Iron, the French ocean carrier’s first dual-fuel methanol vessel, made its maiden call today (5 March) at the Port of Singapore.
Built in South Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, CMA CGM Iron is the first of a series of 12 dual-fuel methanol vessels, each with a capacity of 13,000 TEUs. The sister ships, including CMA CGM Cobalt, Argon, Platinum, Mercury, Helium, Krypton, Thorium, Osmium, Silver, Copper, and Gold, will be progressively deployed in 2025 and 2026.
This new series of vessels marks a significant milestone in the CMA CGM Group’s journey towards achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. It also underscores the company’s strategic and technological partnership with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and South Korea in its efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry.
CMA CGM Iron will be deployed on the CIMEX1 service, connecting Asia to the Middle East Gulf region.
Xavier Leclercq, Vice-President in charge of Newbuilding at CMA CGM, declared: “Thanks to our long-standing collaboration with the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, we have met the challenge of this new propulsion system. This feat of engineering brings us closer to the Net Zero Carbon goal, complementing our dual-fuel gas-powered vessels.”
