HHLA’s CTA to implement 5G Network under DigiTest initiative

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) is receiving funding to establish a 5G network as part of the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport’s (BMDV) “DigiTest” initiative.
This pilot project aims to create a digital testing ground at the terminal, where new application scenarios can be trialed to enhance logistics efficiency.
As part of the PROCON-5G (Port Remote Operations and Container Network with 5G) pilot project, a private 5G mobile network will be deployed at CTA, providing a high-performance and reliable communication infrastructure for port logistics.
With fast response times and high bandwidth, the network enables real-time data transfer—capabilities not possible with older technology. This advancement will further optimize digitalized processes at the terminal while strengthening communication resilience through a provider-independent network.
PROCON-5G is one of several projects receiving funding under the “Digital Testing Grounds in Ports” initiative, which supports the development of digital infrastructure at German seaports and inland ports for testing innovative solutions. The project, sponsored by TÜV Rheinland, has a funding volume of approximately US$2.5 million and is set to run until mid-2026.
Michael Albers, HHLA Project Manager, commented: “By setting up a 5G site network at Container Terminal Altenwerder, we are laying the foundation for making our digitalised processes even more efficient and reliable. The 5G network is also a major prerequisite for the further automation and digitalisation of our processes. At the same time, we are delighted to open CTA up as a testing ground for 5G innovations and thus allow other companies to test this pioneering technology.”
Over the coming months, the 5G network will be implemented in phases. Once fully established, it will be used to test various applications, including the automation of terminal equipment and mobile maintenance.
