HMM launches pilot project for onboard 3D printing system

HMM has initiated a pilot demonstration of an onboard 3D printing system aboard its 9,000 TEU container ship HMM GREEN.

The goal of this project is to evaluate the system’s functionality under actual sailing conditions and assess its potential for producing maintenance parts on board.

The ‘3D Printing Digital Workshop’ installed on the vessel utilizes metal powder to create durable stainless steel components. If successful, the system could significantly reduce lead times for essential parts, enabling ships to produce them on demand. This capability would cut down on inventory costs while minimizing additional expenses and downtime during vessel maintenance.

In September 2023, as part of its technology development, HMM signed an MoU with key organizations including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Energy, Korean Register (KR), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

An HMM official stated, “We are committed to strengthening our competitiveness through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and active participation in research and development of the maritime sector.”
