Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding groups specializing in cruise, naval, and offshore vessels, has confirmed a firm order from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), a leading global cruise company, for four new cruise ships. This marks a significant fleet expansion for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), one of the three brands operated by NCLH. The agreement follows the Letter of Intent signed on April 8, 2024, and is valued at over EUR 2 billion, subject to financing and other standard conditions.
Largest Ever Ships for Norwegian Cruise Line
The Letter of Intent signed with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has now been transformed into a firm order for the construction of four new cruise ships, all destined for the NCL brand. With a gross tonnage of approximately 226,000 tons, these vessels will be the largest ever built for NCL at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard.
The agreement adds to Fincantieri’s previous deliveries for NCL, including Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, as well as the upcoming Norwegian Aqua, the first unit of the Prima Plus class, set for delivery in the coming months. Additionally, three other ships for NCL are currently in various stages of design and construction.
Designed to set new benchmarks in comfort, technology, and sustainability, these state-of-the-art cruise ships will integrate advanced eco-friendly solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving energy efficiency.
Fincantieri Strengthens Cruise Portfolio
With a history spanning over 230 years, Fincantieri has delivered more than 7,000 vessels and operates 18 shipyards across four continents. The company has built a strong relationship with NCLH through multiple vessel constructions and continues to reinforce its position as a global leader in cruise shipbuilding. This latest order further expands Fincantieri’s influence in the high-value shipbuilding market.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ Fleet Expansion
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. is a leading global cruise company operating Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The company’s fleet consists of 32 ships, offering itineraries to nearly 700 destinations worldwide. As part of its long-term fleet expansion strategy, NCLH plans to add 13 new ships across its three brands by 2036, increasing capacity by approximately 41,000 berths.
Bunkering and Sustainability Considerations
Fuel efficiency and sustainable bunkering strategies will be critical for these next-generation cruise ships. With the industry shifting towards alternative fuels such as LNG, biofuels, and potential hydrogen-based solutions, it remains to be seen which bunkering options NCL will implement. Given Fincantieri’s experience with dual-fuel and future-ready propulsion systems, these ships could feature cutting-edge fuel technologies to meet evolving emissions regulations.
Fincantieri’s agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings represents a major step forward for sustainable cruise ship design and innovation. By combining comfort, advanced technology, and innovative energy-efficient solutions, these new vessels will enhance the cruising experience while reducing their environmental footprint. As construction progresses, the industry will closely watch how these ships integrate alternative fuels and next-generation propulsion systems to shape the future of cruise operations.
