Yeosu-Gwangyang Port Authority scores as MSC and Gemini add calls

Yeosu-Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA) says its marketing efforts have paid off as Gwangyang, South Korea’s third-busiest container port, is included in Gemini Cooperation’s line-up.

YGPA said that the port will have more connections to Europe, the United States and the Middle East, having reached out to MSC and Gemini, the alliance between Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd.

In particular, MSC’s Albatros service and Gemini’s A5 shuttle service will call at Gwangyang. Albatros will link Gwangyang to the UK port of Felixstowe for the first time, boosting the competitiveness of South Korean shippers.

Gemini’s A5 service will be served by Panamax ships. After loading at Gwangyang, containers will be transshipped at APM Terminals’ Tanjung Pelepas port in Malaysia for connecting voyages to 25 European ports, 16 ports in North America, and 12 ports in the Middle East. The A5 rotation is Gwangyang-Busan-Tanjung Pelepas-Singapore-Xiamen-Gwangyang, aiming to reduce the number of days for major ocean routes from four to two days.
