The ship-to-ship bunkering operation was conducted by Seaspan’s 7,600 cubic meter LNG bunkering vessel Seaspan Lions on January 30, 2025.

“Completing our first successful bunkering in local waters is a major milestone for Seaspan Energy and marks the introduction of a low-carbon fuel alternative from the Port of Vancouver and beyond,” said HarlyPenner, President of Seaspan Energy.

“With two of our LNG bunkering vessels now operational and our first bunkering in the books, our message to ship owners globally is that we now offer an accredited LNG bunkering option here in Vancouver.”

To remind, Seaspan received the first LNG bunkering accreditation issued by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) in November 2024 and thus became authorized to conduct ship-to-ship bunkering for LNG-fueled vessels calling at the Vancouver port.

The company’s first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering took place in December 2024 in the Port of Long Beach which marked the beginning of its service offering on the West Coast of North America where the company operates a fleet of three 112-meter-long LNG bunkering vessels – Seaspan GaribaldiSeaspan Lions, and Seaspan Baker.

The 7,600 cubic meter vessels are built by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) in China. The ships are fitted with a direct current power distribution system, supported by three dual-fuel generators, and propelled by two 1,600 KW azimuth thrusters, which are believed to enhance the environmental performance in terms of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) and operational pollution emissions while improving economic efficiency.
