Fire breaks out on Malta-flagged tanker in East Johor Strait

A fire broke out in the engine room of a ship in the East Johor Strait, within Singapore waters, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The authority said they were alerted on October 21 at 10:30am to the fire in the engine room onboard the Malta-flagged tanker, MED ATLANTIC, in the East Johor Strait, within Singapore waters.

As reported, all 22 crew have disembarked the vessel and are safe with no injuries.

An MPA patrol craft, two Police Coast Guard craft, three Singapore Civil Defence Force marine firefighting and rescue vessels, and two tug-boats have been deployed to render assistance and ensure navigational safety.

According to MPA, the vessel is currently anchored and there is no disruption to vessel traffic in the area.

Meanwhile the authority is issuing navigational broadcasts for passing vessels to keep clear of the incident area.

The Singapore Food Agency is also monitoring the situation closely and has advised the fish farms in the vicinity to take the necessary precautionary measures.
