ClassNK announces successful CO2 capture from Evergreen's neopanamax vessel

ClassNK announced that in late April, Evergreen's neopanamax container ship successfully captured CO2 using the OCCS system.

The Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) issued a press release, on 1 October, announcing that in late April of this year, the OCCS system installed on Evergreen's neopanamax container ship (registered under Panama and classed by ClassNK) effectively captured CO2 from its exhaust emissions. The captured CO2 was transferred to a shore facility for recycling. ClassNK verified the volume of the offloaded CO2 and subtracted it from the vessel's annual CO2 emissions as part of the CII assessment, following guidance from the Panama Maritime Authority. This initiative marks a pioneering effort in the maritime sector, paving the way for widespread practical operations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It represents a significant advancement toward achieving net-zero GHG emissions in the industry.

Role of Each Party

  • Panama Maritime Authority: Responsible for determining the deduction of the captured CO2 amount from the OCCS system in the annual CO2 emissions assessment for the CII.
  • Evergreen: In charge of the installation and operation of the OCCS system, including the capture, offloading, and recycling of CO2.
  • Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute: Focused on the development of the OCCS system and providing technical support for its operation.
  • ClassNK: Ensures compliance with safety standards as outlined in the Guidelines for Shipboard
