RINA revises its Rules for the Classification of Ships

Classification Society RINA has updated its Rules for the Classification of Ships, with the revised regulations taking effect on January 1, 2025.

Part A – Classification and Surveys

• Key Changes:
  • Introduced procedures for dual/class assignment (IACS PR1B Rev.7) and assigning class for pre-approved designs (IACS PR42).
  • Added new service features like “Aquaculture” and “Small Tug” for workboats.
  • Aligned survey requirements with IMO resolutions and updated classification protocols.

Part B – Hull and Stability

• Highlights:
  • New requirements for cofferdams separating potable water tanks from hazardous substances.
  • Clarified welding throat thickness requirements in line with automated procedures.

Part C – Machinery, Systems, and Fire Protection

• Major Updates:
  • New standards for ambient conditions, ship motions, and engine testing procedures (e.g., IACS UR M46, UR M83).
  • Specific requirements for methyl/ethyl alcohol fuel piping systems due to toxicity risks.
  • Updated standards for internal combustion engines using biofuels and alternative fuels.

Part D – Materials and Welding

• Notable Additions:
  • Introduced new NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) requirements and updated rules for cast steel and copper alloy propellers.
  • Aligned hull and machinery material standards with updated IACS requirements (e.g., UR W35, UR W27).
