NS United Kaiun Kaisha and Brazilian mining company Vale International SA have agreed to install rotor sails manufactured by Anemoi Marine Technologies on 400,000dwt-type Valemax VLOC, NSU Tubarao.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with NS United Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (NSU) and charterer Vale to install five folding rotor sails on a 400k dwt Valemax VLOC,” Anemoi said on Thursday in a social media post.

The vessel has been engaged in a long-term transportation contract between NSU and Vale since its delivery in September 2020.

As informed, the installation of the rotor sails on the ship is scheduled around September 2025.

A rotor sail is a device to obtain propulsion by using the pressure difference generated around a cylinder by rotating a cylindrical sail installed on the deck.

It is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from the ship by approximately 6-12%.

The five rotor sail units which will be used on this vessel will be 35m high and 5m in diameter.
