Georgia Ports handles over 2.8 miilion TEUs from July to December
The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported over 2.8 million TEUs in fiscal year-to-date 2025 (1 July 2024 – 31 December 2024), reflecting an 11.4% increase—nearly 300,000 TEUs—at the Port of Savannah, compared to the same period last year.
Georgia Ports processed more than 442,000 TEUs in December alone, marking a 4.7% rise (19,850 TEUs) compared to the same month in 2023.
“We’ve seen twelve consecutive months of year-over-year container volume growth and we’re on track for a strong fiscal year that ends June 30th, 2025,” stated Griff Lynch, President and CEO of GPA.
The Appalachian Regional Port (ARP) also contributed to GPA’s growth. ARP’s volume reached 6,084 TEUs in December, up 20.6% from the prior year.
GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said the Garden City West Terminal storage yard’s cars-in-containers project will be completed in February, as the customer transitions cargo to Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) service at the Port of Brunswick.
On 25 January, four new ship-to-shore cranes manufactured by Finland-based Konecranes arrived for installation at the Port of Savannah.
Other key projects at the US port include the Blue Ridge Connector in Gainesville, which is 50% complete and set to open in 2026 as an inland port to serve a rapidly expanding region. Additionally, GPA has invested US$40 million in an expanded US Customs inspection facility, doubling its size to enhance efficiency at Garden City Terminal. The facility is scheduled to open in March 2025. Meanwhile, the Savannah Container Terminal remains in the permit phase.

In the autos and heavy equipment sector, GPA processed 443,763 units of RoRo cargo at the Port of Brunswick in fiscal year-to-date 2025, reflecting a 7.5% increase (31,125 units). However, December saw a 7% decline, with 69,000 units handled—5,200 fewer than the previous year. These figures include total RoRo volumes at Colonel’s Island, covering automobiles, machinery, static cargo, boats, and other vehicles.
GPA completed US$262 million in enhancements at the Port of Brunswick in 2024, adding new warehousing and processing facilities along with more than 450,000 square metres of RoRo cargo storage. Construction is now underway on a new railyard at Colonel’s Island, while plans for a fourth RoRo berth are in the engineering phase. On 21 January 2025, Colonel’s Island also hosted the official opening of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s new Southeast port hub.
At Mayor’s Point Terminal in Brunswick, cargo volumes surged, with 22,500 tons handled in December—a 33.8% increase. Fiscal year-to-date volumes rose to 164,700 tons, up 61.4% from the previous year.
Meanwhile, bulk cargo throughput at East River Terminal and Lanier Dock saw significant growth, rising 44.9% year-over-year to 793,500 tons in FYTD2025. This increase was primarily driven by an 189% surge in December, fueled by higher exports of wood pellets and peanut pellets.
